North Shields removals

Removal companies in North Shields and Tynemouth

North Shields sits on a bank above the river, and that shapes almost every move here. Riverside apartments, upstairs flats and Georgian conversions near the top of town all need a different plan from the family semis out at Preston.

Choosing removal companies in North Shields

Anyone looking for removal companies in North Shields will soon notice the town has two quite different halves. Down by the water are the Fish Quay and the newer apartment buildings along the river. Up the bank is the old town centre around Northumberland Square, with terraces, Tyneside flats and large houses split into apartments.

Further out, North Shields has grown to take in Preston, Chirton, Billy Mill, Percy Main and the Marden estate, where the housing is mainly semis and family homes on wider roads. Tynemouth sits right next door to the east, and plenty of moves go back and forth between the two.

This page goes through the parts of town we are asked about most, the access issues that catch people out, and the routes in and out. If you are moving from a riverside flat to a house in Preston, both ends need thinking about, not just the bigger one.

Moving around North Shields

A neighbourhood guide to moving in North Shields

Each part of North Shields brings its own loading problems. These notes cover the areas where we see most moves, from the riverside to the northern estates.

Fish Quay and the riverside

Converted warehouses and newer apartment blocks sit alongside working fish quay buildings. Access roads can be busy with deliveries early in the day, and some blocks have shared lifts that need booking with the building manager. Ask about loading bays and lift sizes before the day.

Northumberland Square and the town centre

Georgian and Victorian terraces, many now divided into flats, around the square and nearby streets. Upstairs flats with long internal staircases are common, and on-street parking is limited. Expect most items to be carried by hand rather than wheeled.

Royal Quays

A newer residential area near the marina and the outlet shopping centre, built on former dockland. Most homes have driveways or allocated parking, which makes loading easy. Some townhouses spread over three floors, so stairs still feature.

Preston Village and Preston Grange

Preston Village sits north of the town centre, with Preston Grange estate further north again. Housing is mostly semis and detached family homes with drives. These are often larger loads with garages, garden sheds and lofts to empty.

Chirton and Billy Mill

Rows of terraces and semis to the west of the town centre. Streets are generally wide enough for a removal lorry, but cars are parked on both sides in the evenings. Daytime loading is usually the easier option.

Percy Main

A former colliery village close to the river and the Tyne Tunnel approach, with terraced streets and some newer housing. Rows are compact, so we often use a smaller vehicle or shuttle from a larger one parked nearby.

Tynemouth

Next door to the east, with Victorian terraces and period houses near Front Street and the coast. Parking near the seafront is in high demand at weekends and in good weather, so a midweek move is far easier.

Steep banks, upstairs flats and parking

The drop from the town centre down to the Fish Quay is steep, and some of the connecting streets are narrow or one-way. A large lorry is not always the right choice for riverside properties. Sometimes a smaller van, or two vehicles sharing the load, is quicker overall because it can get closer to the door.

Upstairs Tyneside flats are a big part of the housing in the older parts of North Shields. They have their own front door at street level and a straight, steep staircase inside. Sofas and wardrobes that went up years ago may not come down the same way, so we check measurements and bring tools for taking items apart. If you are moving from one of these, our flat and apartment removals page explains how we handle stairs and shared entrances.

Where you need a reserved parking space outside the property, check with North Tyneside Council about the process. Restrictions differ between streets, and the council is the only reliable source for current arrangements. Give yourself plenty of notice, as these requests take time.

Routes in and out of North Shields

The Coast Road (A1058) is the main route between North Shields and Newcastle, and it runs on towards Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. It gets heavy at rush hour in both directions. For moves heading south of the river, the A19 and the Tyne Tunnel are the obvious route, as the Shields Ferry to South Shields carries foot passengers and cycles, not removal vans.

Moves up the coast are short and common. Our page on removals in Whitley Bay covers Monkseaton, Cullercoats and the seafront streets. For people heading into the city, the access in places like Jesmond and Gosforth is very different, and we would plan the second half of the day accordingly.

For moves out of the region, we handle long distance removals from North Tyneside to anywhere in the UK, using the A19 to reach the A1 without crossing the city centre.

Typical moves we plan in North Shields

The riverside and town centre produce a lot of one and two-bedroom flat moves: first-time buyers, renters and people downsizing from family homes in Preston or Tynemouth. For lighter loads, a man and van service is often enough and keeps things simple.

Family houses in Preston Grange, Royal Quays and the northern estates are usually full-day jobs with a larger crew. Garages, lofts and garden equipment add more than most people expect, so a survey before quoting helps us send the right vehicle the first time.

Removal costs depend on volume, the distance between properties, access at each end and any extra services. Our removal costs guide runs through each factor. Once you have a moving date in mind, get in touch with your details and we will arrange a quote.

FAQs

Moving in North Shields: your questions

Local questions, answered plainly.

Can a removal lorry get down to the Fish Quay?

Yes, but it depends on the building and the time of day. Some riverside apartment blocks have loading areas, while others are reached from narrow or busy roads. We usually check the access in advance and may use a smaller van for the final stretch. Early mornings can be busy with deliveries to the quay businesses, so mid-morning starts often work better.

How do you move furniture out of an upstairs Tyneside flat?

Upstairs flats in North Shields usually have a single steep staircase from the front door. We measure large items against the stairwell, take apart beds and wardrobes where needed, and carry everything by hand with blankets and straps. Sofas are the item most likely to cause problems, so tell us the size and whether it came in through a window.

Can you use the Shields Ferry to move to South Shields?

No. The ferry carries foot passengers and bicycles, not vehicles. Removal vans go through the Tyne Tunnel on the A19, which is the quickest crossing between North Shields and South Shields. Tunnel tolls are part of the travel cost, and we include the route in your quote so there are no surprises on the day.

Do you cover Tynemouth and Cullercoats as well?

Yes. Tynemouth and Cullercoats are right next door and share the NE30 postcode with parts of North Shields. Moves between these areas are common, especially people moving closer to the coast or downsizing from period houses. Parking near the seafront is the main issue, so we prefer to schedule these moves midweek where possible.

How far ahead should I book a removal in North Shields?

Two to four weeks is a sensible minimum, and longer for Fridays, month ends and the summer. If you need a reserved parking space outside a town centre property, allow extra time to arrange it with North Tyneside Council. For flats with shared lifts, book the lift with the building manager as soon as you know your date.
