What a man and van job actually is

Our man and van Newcastle service is the simple option: one van, one driver who lifts, and a second person when the load needs two. It suits moves where a full crew and a lorry would be too much, such as a studio flat, a student room, a few items from a storage unit or a run over to a family member's house.

The difference from a full house move is mostly scale and planning. There is no survey visit, packing is usually down to you, and the job is often priced on time. That makes it quick to arrange, but it also means the more ready you are when the van pulls up, the less the job costs.

Below we explain what realistically fits in a van, how student moves work around the universities, and how to tell whether you need a man and van or something bigger.

Man and Van

Why people book a man and van

The practical reasons a van and driver is often the right size of job.

Often booked by time

Many jobs are booked by the hour, so being packed and ready when the van arrives keeps the cost down.

One or two people

The driver helps with every load. Add a second person for heavy items or upstairs flats.

Student moves

Halls, shared houses and trips home at the start and end of the academic year.

Van-sized loads

Studio and one-bedroom flats, part loads, and anything too big for the car.

Quick to arrange

No survey needed for small jobs. Send a list and a few photos and we can confirm the details.

More than one stop

Collect from one address and drop at two, or pick up from a storage unit on the way.

How much fits in a man and van in Newcastle

A large panel van, the type most man and van jobs use, will usually take the contents of a studio flat or a lightly furnished one-bedroom flat. Think a double bed, a two or three-seater sofa, a wardrobe or chest of drawers, a small table and chairs, a TV and a couple of dozen boxes. A one-bedroom flat with lots of books, a fully stocked kitchen and a big corner sofa may need two trips or a bigger vehicle.

The quickest way to an accurate answer is to send a list of the large items and a few photos. Tell us which floor you are on at both ends, whether there is a lift, and how far the van can park from the door. Those three things change the length of a job more than the amount of stuff does.

Be honest about the boxes. People tend to guess low, and the last half hour of a job is often spent on bags and loose items that were never on the list. If you are not sure, say so, and we can plan for a little extra space.

Student moves around Newcastle's universities

Newcastle has two large universities, Newcastle University and Northumbria University, both close to the city centre. Every summer and autumn, thousands of students move between halls, shared houses and home, and a lot of those moves are just too big for a car.

Many students in their second and third years live in shared houses and flats in Jesmond, Heaton, Sandyford and Fenham. These are often upstairs Tyneside flats with narrow stairs and residents' permit parking outside, so allow time for carrying and check whether the van can stop near the door. In the city centre, purpose-built student blocks often have booked move-in slots and a loading area you need to arrange with reception.

Shared-house tenancies often end and start on the same few dates over the summer, and moves into halls bunch up in September. Those weeks get busy for every van in the city. If you know your dates, book early. If you are flexible, a midweek date away from the peaks is easier to get.

A tip for students: share a van. If two or three friends are moving from the same house to the same new one, or are all heading home in the same direction, one booking with several drops usually works out cheaper than separate trips.

Getting the most out of your booking

Because many man and van jobs are charged by time, waiting around is money spent. Have everything packed and taped before the van arrives. Take beds apart beforehand if you can, put the screws in a labelled bag and tape it to the frame. Clear a path to the door, and make sure someone with keys is at the other end.

Use proper boxes rather than bin bags for anything breakable, and keep each box to a weight one person can carry down a staircase. Books go in small boxes, duvets and cushions in big ones. If you would rather not do any of this, our packing services can be added, although for a studio flat most people pack for themselves.

For a single heavy item, such as a sofa bought online or a wardrobe from a relative, our furniture removals service is set up around collections and deliveries rather than whole moves.

Moving out of a block with a lift, a concierge or a building manager? Book the lift and the loading area in advance. Our page on flat removals covers the extra planning apartment buildings need.

When a man and van is not the right choice

If you are moving out of a two or three-bedroom house, a van tends to turn into several trips and a very long day. A full crew with a larger vehicle is usually quicker and better value, and our house removals page explains how those moves are planned. Businesses with more than a few desks should look at office removals instead.

Parking, areas we cover and what affects the price

Parking is the biggest hidden factor in a man and van job. In the permit zones around Jesmond, Heaton and Sandyford, and on busy main roads, the van may have to stop further away than you expect. Newcastle City Council lets you apply to reserve parking bays for a set date, so check its parking pages for current charges and notice periods if access outside your door is tight.

We cover Newcastle and the towns around it, including Gateshead, Whitley Bay, North Shields and Cramlington, along with runs into Northumberland and County Durham. If you are moving out to Gosforth or over to the coast, the same booking works.

The cost depends on how long the job takes, whether you need one person or two, the distance and access at both ends. Our guide to removal costs explains how those factors add up. When you are ready, send your list and addresses through our contact page for a quote.

How it works

How to book a man and van

  1. Send your list

Tell us the big items, roughly how many boxes, both addresses and the floor levels at each end.

  2. Confirm the van and help

We suggest one or two people and how long it is likely to take, then confirm a date and arrival time.

  3. Get packed

Box everything up, take beds apart if you can and clear a route to the door.

  4. Load, drive and unload

The driver helps load, drives to the new address and helps carry everything in.

FAQs

Man and Van: common questions

Straight answers to the things people ask us most.

We cover Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding areas, including Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Jesmond, Gosforth, North Shields, Whitley Bay and Cramlington.

Do I need one man or two?

One person is fine for boxes and lighter furniture if you can help with the lifting. Book two for sofas, double wardrobes, washing machines, fridge freezers or anything going up and down stairs, especially in Tyneside flats where the staircase is narrow and steep. Two people on a heavy item is safer and usually quicker, which offsets some of the extra cost.

Will the driver help me carry things?

Yes, the driver loads and unloads with you. That is the difference between a man and van and simply hiring a van yourself. If you cannot lift, or there are lots of heavy items, book a second helper so you are not the one holding the other end of the sofa on the stairs.

Can you move me out of student halls in Newcastle?

Yes. Check with your halls for any move-out rules, such as booked time slots or a particular loading area, and let us know before the day. Have everything packed and ready to go, because lots of students tend to leave at the same time and the loading area can get busy, which eats into a booking charged by time.

Can you do a same-day job?

Sometimes. It depends on what is already booked that day and how big the job is. Send your details as early as you can, with photos of the larger items and both addresses, and we will tell you straight away whether it can be done. Midweek days are generally easier to fit in than Fridays and weekends.

Are my things covered while they are in the van?

Ask any man and van company what goods-in-transit cover they have and what it excludes before you book, and get the answer in writing. Some policies treat items you pack yourself differently from items the driver packs. Laptops, jewellery, passports and anything irreplaceable are best carried with you rather than put in the van.

Can a man and van take rubbish to the tip?

Carrying other people's waste needs a waste carrier registration, and council recycling centres often restrict or refuse commercial vans. Check your council's rules before planning a move with a tip run on the end. Ask us when you book and we will tell you clearly what we can and cannot take away.
