Removal companies in Jesmond for flats, terraces and student lets

Jesmond is one of the busiest parts of Newcastle for moves, and one of the trickiest. Upstairs flats, permit parking and tenancy dates that all fall together mean the planning matters as much as the lifting.

Jesmond Dene, Newcastle upon Tyne

Removals in Jesmond, NE2

Most people comparing removal companies in Jesmond are moving in or out of a flat. The suburb is full of them: Tyneside flats on the side streets, conversions of big Victorian houses, and flats above the shops and bars on Osborne Road. Few have lifts, and many share one front door and a narrow stair.

Jesmond is also a short distance from the city centre and both universities, so the population turns over quickly. Students, young professionals, hospital staff and families all move here, often on the same handful of dates each summer.

We cover the whole of Jesmond, from Sandyford and South Jesmond up to North Jesmond and the houses along Jesmond Dene, and moves between Jesmond and anywhere else on Tyneside or further afield.

Moving around Jesmond

Jesmond streets and what to expect on the day

Jesmond looks uniform from a distance, but access varies a lot from one part to the next.

West Jesmond

Long streets of Tyneside flats and terraced houses west of Osborne Road, around Acorn Road and the West Jesmond Metro station. Upstairs flats have their own front door and a single straight stair, which is narrow and often steep. Back lanes run behind most streets and can be the easier way in for big items.

Osborne Road

Hotels, bars and restaurants at street level with flats above and behind. It is busy from late afternoon onwards, and servicing vehicles compete for space in the morning. We aim to load early and use the side streets where we can.

Acorn Road and St George's Terrace

The shopping streets of West Jesmond, lined with cafes and small shops and surrounded by terraces and flats. Short-stay bays and loading restrictions are common. A van parked in the wrong place here causes problems quickly, so we agree the exact spot beforehand.

Brandling Village

A conservation area of Victorian and Edwardian houses in the south of Jesmond, many now split into flats. Streets are narrower than the main roads and the houses are tall, so top-floor flats mean several flights of stairs. Original features such as cornices and banisters need care when furniture goes past.

South Jesmond and Sandyford

Close to the city centre and the universities, with a high share of student lets and conversions. Shared houses here can hold five or six people's belongings, all leaving on the same day. Permit parking is widespread.

North Jesmond

Larger semis and terraced houses on wider streets towards Gosforth, with more family homes and fewer flats. Parking is easier than further south, but residents' schemes have been extended to some streets. Expect more furniture and full lofts.

Jesmond Dene edge and Jesmond Park

Detached and large semi-detached houses near the dene, on quieter roads with driveways. Access is usually the easiest in Jesmond. Long gardens and garden steps add time on bigger moves.

Parking and permit zones in Jesmond

Much of Jesmond has residents' permit parking, and Newcastle City Council has added and adjusted zones over time. Rules differ from street to street, with different hours and days, so the sign at the end of your road is what counts on the day.

If there is nowhere legal to stop near your door, contact Newcastle City Council about suspending parking for the move. Do it as soon as you have a date. The council has its own process, notice period and charges, so check those with them directly rather than relying on an old figure from a friend.

It also helps to tell neighbours and, if you are in a shared building, the other flats. A note through the doors a few days before often frees up the space outside on the morning.

Getting in and out of Jesmond

Jesmond Road links the suburb to the Central Motorway and the Coast Road, while Osborne Road and Clayton Road run north towards Gosforth. For moves out to the coast we usually head for the Coast Road; for moves north, the Great North Road. If your new home is in Gosforth, our page on removals in Gosforth covers the parking at that end.

Moves south across the river often go via the Central Motorway and the Redheugh Bridge rather than the Tyne Bridge while restoration work continues. Our notes on removal companies in Gateshead explain the access issues on the other side.

Time of day matters more than distance in Jesmond. The roads near the schools are slow at drop-off and pick-up times, and Osborne Road fills up in the evening, especially at weekends. We plan to finish the loading before either becomes a problem.

Flats, student lets and the summer rush

An upstairs Tyneside flat is the most common Jesmond job. The stair is usually straight but narrow, with a turn at the top, and sofas, mattresses and wardrobes are where the time goes. Our flat removals service is built around carrying safely on stairs like these, and our crews will take furniture apart rather than risk the walls or the banister.

Student moves cluster at the end of tenancy periods, often in late June and around the start of July, when much of Jesmond changes hands within a few days. A man and van is usually enough for one or two students, and housemates often share a booking to keep things simple. Book early if your dates fall in that window.

For larger flats and family homes in North Jesmond or around the dene, packing help can save a weekend of wrapping glasses. If you want to understand what changes the price of a Jesmond move, such as stairs, parking distance and crew size, our page on removal costs lays out the factors.

FAQs

Moving in Jesmond: your questions

Local questions, answered plainly.

Can a removal van park outside my flat in Jesmond?

Sometimes, but many Jesmond streets have residents' permit bays or loading restrictions that apply at certain times. Check the signs on your street, and if there is nowhere legal to stop, ask Newcastle City Council about a temporary parking suspension well before the move. Back lanes can also work for some terraces and Tyneside flats, and we check that option during the survey.

Will my sofa go up the stairs of a Tyneside flat?

Measure the width of the front door and the narrowest point of the stair, then the height of the turn at the top. Tyneside flat stairs are often narrow with a low ceiling at the landing. Many sofas still fit if the feet come off and the sofa is stood on end. If not, we can often take it apart and rebuild it in the flat.

When is the busiest time for moves in Jesmond?

Late June and early July, when a large share of student and young professional tenancies end. The last working day of most months is also busy. If your date falls in either window, book early and sort parking well ahead. Moves outside those periods are much easier to arrange and usually allow more flexibility on start times.

Do you move students out of Jesmond shared houses?

Yes, regularly. Housemates often book one van between them, with each person's belongings labelled and dropped at different addresses or taken to storage. Tell us how many people are moving, where everything is going and whether any big items such as beds or desks belong to the landlord, so we only take what should leave the house.

Do you only cover Jesmond or the rest of Newcastle as well?

Jesmond is one of the areas we cover most, but we move people across the whole city and the wider North East. Many Jesmond moves go to Heaton, Gosforth, the coast or across the river. Our homepage explains more about our work as one of the removal companies in Newcastle, and how we plan moves across Tyneside.
